Based on Babel’s own diaries that he wrote during the Russo-Polish war of 1920, Red Cavalry is a lyrical, unflinching and often startlingly ironic depiction of the violence and horrors of war. A classic of modern fiction, the short stories are as powerful today as they were when they burst onto the Russian literary landscape nearly a century ago.

Born in Odessa in 1894, Babel is as great a master of the short story as Chekhov or Hemingway. Most striking of all his work is Red Cavalry, set during the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–21. Isaac Babel has a way with atmospheric detail. In several of his short stories in Red Cavalry, he uses descriptions of the setting to shape the reader’s experience and understanding of the tone of the story. Regarded as Babel's best work, Konarmiia (Red Cavalry) is a cycle of thirty-four short stories that initially appeared in periodicals in the Soviet Union between 1923 and 1925.
